Message from Captain Landsman – reference Auto Thefts in Towson

We have experienced several theft of auto cases in our precinct and across the region where cars have been left unattended on the street, in driveways or in front of businesses with the engines running.  During the cold weather months, it is not uncommon to see an increase in these types of thefts.  However, things really seem to be picking up.  I have put out messages before asking residents to remove keys from vehicles and to take measures to prevent vehicle theft.  In the last 28 days, our precinct has experienced 9 cases of auto theft.  In 7 of those cases, keys were left in the vehicle, in an unlocked vehicle nearby, or the vehicle was running while unattended.  A call was dispatched just a half an hour ago for a stolen CRV that was left warming up on Walker Avenue.  It takes just seconds for someone to jump into a running car and take off with it.  It does not matter what kind of vehicle it is.  These suspects are opportunists.  Providing criminals with easy access to transportation enables them to move around the area to commit other crimes.  We have to make life difficult for the criminals!  Thats what we do in Towson!

Thanks for everything that you do,

Jay
